Blog / Five Elements – Fire

The Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water) are fundamental in Chinese Medicine Philosophy and they are all linked to a season. There are sets of correspondences relating to each Element, and in clinic these are useful when it comes to diagnosis. The Five Elements all relate to each other through different nurturing/controlling sequences which are frequently utilised in Acupuncture. As we have just moved into the summer season in the Chinese calendar, it is important to look at the correspondences relating to the summer Element of Fire. This can be done both in clinic and everyday settings. Here are some features of the Fire element.

Climate: Heat.

Organs: Heart and Small Intestine. (Also, Pericardium and Three-Heater. Fire has four Organ correspondences as opposed to the other Elements which have two each.) The Heart is the Emperor, and is in charge. Because of its status, it houses the Shen (Spirit). Mental functions can be seen to be linked to Fire.

Colour: Red. Links to the Heart and Blood Vessels.

Emotions: Joy and happiness. (Note though that excess Joy can be seen to injure the Heart, and if there is imbalance, there may be sadness.)

Sense Organ: Tongue – if the tip of the tongue is red, there may be excess heat in the body.

Taste: Bitter.

Body secretion: Sweat – not surprising considering Fire relates to summer, but an excess of sweating may indicate an imbalance that needs to be addressed.

Summer is a very Yang time of the year, everything is starting to grow and bloom, and the sun is penetrating. It is a time for celebrating and spreading joy. In the body, however, too much Fire can cause heat can develop and lead to swelling, redness and inflammation. We need to find balance in our lifestyles to avoid an excess of heat. This can be done by taking walks near cooling water or finding time to meditate to connect to our quiet, still Yin side.
