Cosmetic Acupuncture

What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Acupuncturists recognise that the inner wellbeing and health of a person is reflected in their complexion and the condition of their skin. Facial lines and creases can develop for a number of reasons; mental stress can cause tension in our jaws, frowning can create lines between our eyebrows, joy can cause laughter lines around our mouths. These are all natural expressions of life! However, many of us want to look as healthy and glowing as possible. When we feel good about our facial appearance, it can help to boost our general wellbeing.

Cosmetic Acupuncture aims to create a stimulus in order to encourage the skin's natural repairing, as these processes generally slow down as we age. For facial acupuncture, very fine (thin) needles are used. These needles stimulate collagen production, increase blood flow to the face, and help to relieve the emotional tension held within our facial muscles. Some needles may be threaded under the skin to soften expression lines. Skin is left plumped and rejuvenated in order to bring a natural glow and to let the spirit (Shen) shine through in the face.

Alongside the facial points, some balancing body acupuncture points are needled to help with general wellbeing and to create a relaxing experience. The needles remain in the face for 20 minutes before they are carefully removed.

Preparation for your treatment

Because of the amount of fine blood vessels on the face, bruising is more common than elsewhere on the body. Nicola therefore doesn’t recommend a treatment the day before an important event. Arnica cream will be applied to any bruising, which should fade over a day or two.

Ideally no make-up should be worn (mascara and eyeliner is fine). Nicola has an organic cleanser for patients needing to remove make-up in clinic. Disposable headbands are supplied during a treatment. Evening appointments are particularly suitable for this type of treatment as most people feel very relaxed afterwards.

Facial acupuncture may not be suitable if you are on blood-thinning medication or have very high blood pressure. If you have previously had Botox or silicone injections please wait six months before booking a Cosmetic Acupuncture appointment.
